February Writing Challenge: Day Six
For day six of my writing challenge it asks me to talk about something that I often recommend to others. I think that something I most often recommend to others is to take care of themselves. I feel it’s really important for all of us to take care of ourselves because it’s something I feel is very often forgotten.
We worry about our friends, family, money, jobs etc and many times become wrapped up in day-to-day activities that we forget to take care of the most important part of our lives; us. We are our longest commitments which means that without us we aren’t capable of taking care of our other responsibilities.
As a social worker my professors and supervisors are constantly preaching self-care. One time I heard a saying that has stuck with me since that said,
“When you’re on an airplane and the flight attendant is explaining what to do in case of an emergency, they always tell you that when the oxygen masks deploy to apply yours first, and then help the person next to you.”
I’m unsure who originally stated that but I am grateful for them. They’re so correct. In order to be able to effectively help others, we must first have taken care of ourselves. It’s not selfish, it’s not neglectful, it’s important.
