February Writing Challenge
Today’s post asks me to talk about what I don’t understand. I don’t understand a lot of things, but the main theme that I don’t understand recently is why most people resort to being nasty to one another due to differences.
It’s human nature that not everyone we meet we’re going to like. We’re all going to have different thoughts, opinions and beliefs. I understand that very well. Where I get lost is where the desire to be nasty to those who are different than us comes from.
Is it the feeling of being empowered? I can think of a million other things that could be empowering (and they don’t include tearing one another down). Perhaps it’s fear that our way isn’t the only way, or the fear of being wrong causing this deep need to make sure no one with different opinions speaks their mind.
Now, this isn’t to say that if a person is being disrespectful that we should just allow them to treat us poorly but the initial reaction shouldn’t be to belittle one another. The truth is, we never know what another person is going through and there are people who only have their beliefs. It’s okay not to agree with everyone but it will never be okay to be rude just because you don’t like a small detail in what makes up a person.
