Today I’m angry. This anger is a direct result of Jussie Smollett and the recent events surrounding him. This post isn’t going to be humorous, it’s not going to be a “feel good” post and it just may offend someone. I’m going to write it, anyway.
For anyone who isn’t sure what I’m talking about Jussie Smollett is an actor on the show “Empire.” A few weeks back reports stated that Jussie was involved in a hate crime against his race and that his attacker made a comment about this country being “MAGA” country referring to Donald Trump’s campaign slogan. This incident drew a lot of attention from public figures, celebrities and many civilians. I was one of those civilians. I was angry and I felt for this actor.
Within this last week reports have surfaced that Jussie Smollett lied about the attack. Allegedly, he paid someone over $3,000 to stage this attack in hopes it would boost his career. He’s been removed for the series “Empire” and he’s receiving a lot of backlash and was even arrested.
How sickening. In a world where we deal with racism on a daily basis, are completely divided politically and are struggling to give victims the courage to stand up for themselves, how sickening it is that this man has acted with such villainy to “boost his career.”
To the actual victims of assault, hate, racism, and ignorant — please never stop fighting. Do no allow this person’s childishness to cause you to lose the courage you had to stand up for yourself.
To anyone doubting victims when they come forward — please do not allow this act of privilege to deter you from believing a victim who confides in you.
To anyone struggling to see what Jussie did wrong — please consider reading Aesop’s “The Boy Who Cried Wolf.” We’re trying to make the world a safer place for everyone and this greed isn’t going to help anyone take victims seriously.
