I Met Mary Sanderson!

If you following me on Instagram, chances are you already know that last night I got the pleasure of meeting the one and only Kathy Najimy (Sister Mary Sanderson from Hocus Pocus — as if she needs an introduction).

My best friend and I drove an hour and a half to Rochester, NY which is about 70 miles from my house. There was a special screening of Hocus Pocus at the Kodak Theater as well as a live Q & A with Kathy herself. We had the VIP tickets which means I also got to meet her for ten seconds and take a quick photo with her!

Let me tell you, Kathy is incredible sweet and she’s hysterical. I know I said I only met her for ten seconds but even during the Q&A she was so genuine. She spoke directly to audience members, she spoke about important political matters, she spoke about how powerful women are and of course she told us some interesting facts about Hocus Pocus.

For example, did you know that prior to doing Hocus Pocus Kathy was a huge Bette Midler (Winifred Sanderson) fan? And that she would even sneek into dressing rooms to meet her? Well, now you do! I thought that fact was fairly cool.

Something else that really struck me and made me fall in love with this beautiful woman was that, in my home state of New York, she got our governor to agree to change the law that a physical assault case can be reported up to twenty years after the fact, rather than before when it was only five years. This woman is incredible and she is paving the way for survivors to have a voice.

She spoke about how she got started and came from poverty. She said she didn’t fear being told no because she had nothing to lose. She mentioned how she’s lived without money and she’s lived with money so she knows how to live and be happy either way.

I didn’t realize how much Kathy truly did for other human beings. I didn’t realize how amazing of a person she was because until last night I saw her as Mary Sanderson. Hocus Pocus has always been my favorite movie, I’m obsessed with it! So when I saw there was an opportunity to meet her, I jumped at it. I could never have imagined that not only would I have met Kathy Najimy but I also would have been present for some of the most inspirational messages I’ve ever heard.

I highly encouraged you to check out Kathy’s work, as an actress and and activist. She’s incredible in both areas!
